Jet engines actually, not rockets, but rocket sounds better. I have no idea what these do, but it doesn’t really matter. Unless I’m riding in the plane. The important bit is in front, and in focus. My client was looking for an interesting image for their website. They cropped it differently, and it told the story they were after. I’m interested in your thoughts and comments.
The science of automotive paint is stunningly complex. This car only has an “E coat”; it’s the initial coat of paint. It’s a process not unlike electroplating, where the paint is attracted to the metal by an electronic charge. The upshot is that the paint gets onto all of the surfaces of the body including all the inaccessible little nooks and crannies. This, among other things, is why our cars last longer than they used to. My job of course, is make an interesting and compelling photograph for use in an ad. Let me know what you think.
Telepresence, a concept from science fiction is here! Well, not a Princess Leia 3D hologram.This one is made by Suitable Technologies. It’s a beautiful product, making my job a little easier. I really enjoy shooting in the studio. On this day, we had a great team. The client, models, stylist and I were all working well together. Fortunately the studio is large enough the there was no problem pulling in a large truck. Then it was a matter of staging the scenarios that told the client’s story. Working together we made photographs that pleased the client. As always your thoughts and comments are welcome.
This is another in the series I photographed of a Charger Hellcat. Black cars can be tricky to shoot because of the conflict between needing to be gray and needing to look black. And it needs to look shiny too! Too light, and it doesn't look black. Too dark and you cannot see the shape or detail. Let me know what you think.
I got to shoot a fully restored 1966 Shelby Mustang. Ok, it was a job, but it was a treat! This beautiful car had original tires, an original battery (it was just the case of course), tags from the dealership still on it. Let me know what you think.
One of my favorite things about commercial photography is the peek I get into other worlds. In this case it’s the world of fasteners. Fasteners not only hold two things together, a complicated enough job by itself, but simplify, speed, and eliminate errors in production. Mostly I care about tonal values and textures, but as every photograph speaks, it’s important that it tells the right story. Let me know what you think!
Not long ago I had the opportunity to photograph this customized Dodge Charger Hellcat. It’s a beautiful car, though I’d have preferred red to black. Black is nice, but red is just hotter! You can see it’s 700 plus horsepower engine on the studio blog. I am always interested in your thoughts.
Illustrate as in explain, explicate, elucidate, clarify or demonstrate. There are many tricks or devices that help to illustrate motion in a still photograph. This time, the Creative Director thought that a triptych would be best at telling the story. I agree. I'd love to hear your comments or thoughts.
Building any product would be pretty tough without fasteners. And while these don’t look like any fasteners I’ve ever seen, they are. We spent an entire day photographing all kinds of fasteners. It was a productive shoot, and I’m looking forward to another soon Please let me know what you think.
I recently had a project photographing people and trucks in our studio. It was a busy day. This is one of many photographs we made that day. We had a great crew, and client. As always, I’m interested it your thoughts and comments.
My best friend, Richard, created this gold necklace with diamonds. His hand is holding it. This is one of a series of images we’ve done with his hands. The jewelry pops off the black background, and his hand contrasts nicely with the jewelry. The photograph tells the story that this necklace was crafted by an artist. I like working with Richard, he has a finely tuned aesthetic and we collaborate well together.
Recently I had the opportunity to photograph a customized Impala. Silver is one of the easier car colors to light. All the breaks and shapes in the sheet metal almost define themselves. They added 6 inches to the back seat for a little more leg room. The grill was heavily modified too. More to come! As always I am interested in your thoughts.
Tabletop photography has been around since cameras were invented. The tools and techniques have changed over the years, but the vision has remained constant. It is possible to for anyone to put a product into a light tent and probably get an acceptable image. The value that a professional brings to the table (pun intended) is a better image every time that communicates the vision of the maker. A thousand words…
Just because your customers are businesses doesn’t mean you should tolerate crappy looking ads and sales materials. I worked on this project with a talented art director and the result speaks for itself. As always let me know what you think.
There is nothing like a body kit to jazz up a car. I had the opportunity to shoot this Outlaw Mustang in the studio. It’s really beautiful! The wheels, suspension, engine and lots more are enhanced! I recently had the opportunity to photograph an Outlaw Mustang. Black cars are challenging to shoot, but that makes it more fun. Defining the complex shapes of a shiny car with light and reflection is only part of the goal. It’s also necessary to evoke an emotional response. This story is about how the chin spoiler, rocker sills, low profile rear spoiler and lots of other enhancements make it loads better! Let me know what you think!
There is a misguided belief that photography for web should be less expensive. This might be the case if photographers charged by the pixel. The value of an image is not determined by it’s resolution. The value of a photograph is determined by it’s ability to tell a story, communicate an idea, and grab your attention. Shooting on location at the office of an investment advisor, my task was to take photographs that would reflect his business. As he collected antiques related to investment, my job was simplified. The antiques project a timeless stability, and the knowledge and experience to guide clients through the difficult world of investing.
