Building any product would be pretty tough without fasteners. And while these don’t look like any fasteners I’ve ever seen, they are. We spent an entire day photographing all kinds of fasteners. It was a productive shoot, and I’m looking forward to another soon Please let me know what you think.
I recently had a project photographing people and trucks in our studio. It was a busy day. This is one of many photographs we made that day. We had a great crew, and client. As always, I’m interested it your thoughts and comments.
Finding the best angle for a particular car is an impossibility. Best angle for what? Best to display what the designer was thinking? Or best at telling the story that it’s a zoomy exciting car, or a practical safe family car? You get the Idea. Where you stand and where you point has a huge impact on what a photograph says. It’s one of the best lessons I learned from Walter Farynk when I was in school. As always, I’m interested in hearing your thoughts and comments.
My best friend, Richard, created this gold necklace with diamonds. His hand is holding it. This is one of a series of images we’ve done with his hands. The jewelry pops off the black background, and his hand contrasts nicely with the jewelry. The photograph tells the story that this necklace was crafted by an artist. I like working with Richard, he has a finely tuned aesthetic and we collaborate well together.
Recently I had the opportunity to photograph a customized Impala. Silver is one of the easier car colors to light. All the breaks and shapes in the sheet metal almost define themselves. They added 6 inches to the back seat for a little more leg room. The grill was heavily modified too. More to come! As always I am interested in your thoughts.
Tabletop photography has been around since cameras were invented. The tools and techniques have changed over the years, but the vision has remained constant. It is possible to for anyone to put a product into a light tent and probably get an acceptable image. The value that a professional brings to the table (pun intended) is a better image every time that communicates the vision of the maker. A thousand words…
There are thousands of industrial filters that filter a wide assortment of gas and liquid. We were trying to make an interesting photograph to capture the attention of readers. I like stepping outside the bounds of a standard product shot. This hi-key photograph of filter media was one of the solutions that day.
Just because your customers are businesses doesn’t mean you should tolerate crappy looking ads and sales materials. I worked on this project with a talented art director and the result speaks for itself. As always let me know what you think.
There is nothing like a body kit to jazz up a car. I had the opportunity to shoot this Outlaw Mustang in the studio. It’s really beautiful! The wheels, suspension, engine and lots more are enhanced! I recently had the opportunity to photograph an Outlaw Mustang. Black cars are challenging to shoot, but that makes it more fun. Defining the complex shapes of a shiny car with light and reflection is only part of the goal. It’s also necessary to evoke an emotional response. There is a misguided belief that photography for web should be less expensive. This might be the case if photographers charged by the pixel. The value of an image is not determined by it’s resolution. The value of a photograph is determined by it’s ability to tell a story, communicate an idea, and grab your attention. People often associate industrial product photography with slap-dash, down and dirty photography; but it doesn’t have to be. In this project, we needed a few pictures for banners for the client’s home page. The purpose of these photographs is to draw in potential customers with visually compelling imagery. Dynamic photography also helps separate you from your competitors. As always, I’m interested in your thoughts.
Shooting on location at the office of an investment advisor, my task was to take photographs that would reflect his business. As he collected antiques related to investment, my job was simplified. The antiques project a timeless stability, and the knowledge and experience to guide clients through the difficult world of investing. Most people don’t like to think about the things that surgeons do while they’re working. We’re happy enough to have their help when it’s needed. One of the things I love about commercial photography is that it give’s me a peek behind the curtain, into industries and professions that ordinarily are invisible. It’s necessary to learn at least a little about things you’re photographing to tell the story. I am interested in your thoughts and comments.
As the current year ends and a new year begins it’s a good time for introspection. Personally, I have family, friends, and health to be thankful for. A wider global view reveals many people working hard to make a better world. This includes people designing medical devices that perform well and protect health care workers from dangerous toxins. I don’t imagine advertising photography is saving the world, but hopefully, it’s more pleasant to look at. Thanks to all of our clients and suppliers for a wonderful year. May 2015 be even better!
Medical Equipment is fascinating stuff. We don’t usually think about the tools used in operating rooms. Lots of thought goes into the production of the medical devices that help surgeons to do their jobs. Fortunately for me, these tools are visually compelling as well. Very much a collaborative process, it’s vital to have input from clients who understand how they are used and what’s important to feature. Designers / Art Directors are essential as well; they are able to envision all of the uses for my photographs. I am always interested in your thoughts and comments.
I recently met Barry at a parking lot where a lot of, well, car nuts (enthusiasts, whatever, this is Detroit!) hang out with their hot, customized, modified, cars. Barry’s 1966 Mustang has 500 plus horsepower under the hood, a strengthened frame so it doesn't twist, because that's a lot of power. It has a new hood scoop, tires, wheels, awesome! He brought it to the studio so I could photograph it for a day. This is the first of a few shots that I did. Afterword, I showed it to my friend Jim Tocco from Designers & Partners. We have been forging metal for thousands of years. Modern industrial processes are used to forge a wide array of automotive parts. As it involves shiny metal, I enjoy photographing it. In this case, it’s a die and the finished forged part. I stood them up on a table top in my studio using blocks and shims. Afterwords, I put them on a brown background in Photoshop. This is a tourniquet used when doing surgery on hands, arms, legs and feet. We weren’t doing surgery in the studio; it’s not nearly clean enough. The red and blue together with the low-key feel help make this an interesting photograph. The doctor was my assistant. He’s very good, but I’d get nervous if he were working on me in a hospital.
